7 Retro IT Bags From the 2000’s That Will Make a Huge Comeback in 2022

Written by Kathryn Andes

It’s no secret that fashion is a revolving door, old trends coming back into style just as quickly as hot new trends go out of style. Therefore, if you really want to have a timeless wardrobe that never goes out of fashion, then hold onto your classic, popular pieces and your wardrobe will have an everlasting lifeline.
Here are the most popular handbags from the 2000’s that we think will be resurfacing in 2022. Where are all the nostalgic fashionistas? This list is for you.

1. Balenciaga Motorcycle City Bag

The Balenciaga Motorcycle bag was one of the most coveted handbags of the 2000’s and has been seen on celebrities such as Nicole Richie, Anne Hathaway, and Beyonce. The bag originally debuted in 2001, now it is making a comeback in street style on models such as Kendall Jenner and Lily Aldridge. Today’s revival acts as a love letter to the decade defining handbag.

2. Givenchy Nightingale

The Givenchy Nightingale bag was seen on the most popular celebrities such as Hilary Duff and Vanessa Hudgens in the late 2000’s to early 2010’s. After the economic recession in 2008, maximalism and consumerism were at the forefront of fashion. That meant the bigger, the better for handbags and sunglasses. After the microbag craze of 2020-2021 we predict that the Givenchy Nightingale bag will be back in style in 2022, along with larger bags re-entering the fashion cycle.

3. Louis Vuitton Theda Multicolor Monogram

This iconic handbag as seen on socialites such as Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell, and Kim Kardashian, screamed material girl. The bag was often paired with Juicy Couture velour sweat suits, Uggs, and a hot pink Razor phone, a look that true 2000’s fashionistas will never forget. With vintage fashion being a driving force of Gen Z style, we predict seeing this beloved 2004 handbag back on the arms of celebrities in 2022.

4. The YSL Muse

YSL MUSE TOTE

The YSL Muse Bag debuted in February 2006 and it was considered the very first IT bag for the brand. The bag was available in three sizes: medium, large, and oversized. It’s the perfect designer carry-all tote bag, housed on the arms of celebrities such as Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Aniston. We see this bag coming back into style in 2022, given that large tote bags will be one of the biggest trends this year.

5. Chloe Paddington Bag

Nothing says it-girl like a Chloe Paddington Bag, named for one of the busiest neighborhoods in London. In 2005, these were extremely hard to come by, as the original debut of the bag sold out in its first production, never making it into stores. This particular bag has little to no structure, and weighs nearly three pounds, not practical for an everyday purse, but perfect for a fashion statement. Nearly 20 years later, we predict that the Paddington Bag will fly back into style in the new year.

6. Fendi Spy Bag

As seen on fashion lovers such as Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen twins, and Victoria Beckham, the Fendi Spy bag was one of the most desired handbags of 2005, with a long wait list and limited editions. With nostalgia inspired fashion driving the runways, you can expect everything that was old to become new and cool again, just like the Fendi Spy bag.

7. Mulberry Bayswater Tote

If any handbag was spotted on the iconic 2007 Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively, then it is a no brainer that it will inevitably become stylish again, and again. Mulberry was established in 1971 as a luxury brand that produced goods inspired by the English countryside, and aided in pastimes like hunting and fishing. The brand has since evolved to be a sophisticated leather goods company making strides to become carbon neutral, and green in 2021. In the new year we expect to see a big re-emergence of the Bayswater bag. Sustainability is a core value of Gen Z and Mulberry is definitely appealing to its new, younger, and more environmentally conscious audience.
