How These Trending Runway Colors Can Change Your Mood

How These Trending Runway Colors Can Change Your Mood

Written by Kathryn Andes

During the 2020 Autumn/ Winter season, neutral colors like Chocolate Brown, Almond oil Beige, Sandstone Tan, and Sleet Gray dominated the runways and fast fashion lines. But this year is all about color.

The pantone colors of Autumn/ Winter have swept the runway shows with vibrant hues of Fuschia Fedora, Fire Whirl, Pale Rosette, Spring Lake and Illuminating. Designers such as Ralph and Russo, Laquan Smith, Altuzarra, Rodarte, and Brandon Maxwell have all debuted looks using the Pantone color system from dresses and skirts, to blouses and jackets.

A comparison can be made to the psychological and mental health effects that color has on consumers. According to healthline.com chromotherapy also known as color therapy is based on the idea that color can help treat physical or mental health. Research suggests that during the day blue light can improve alertness, reaction time, and general mood. While green light is currently being tested on patients to discover if it will ease the pain of headaches and migraines.

Not only have scientists studied the effects of colored lights on the human psyche, but Constance Hart, a color therapist of twenty eight years, said in a Vogue.com article “Color has an effect on our psyche, it’s always affecting us whether we are aware of it or not.”

In an experiment done by Liana Satenstein at Vogue, testing how wearing color affects the human psyche, Hart recommended she wear certain colors to bring out specific moods. Burgundy to make her feel stable and grounded, pink to guide her in self love, orange to bring out her social side, green for balance, navy blue to drive her intuition, and lastly yellow for joy and mental clarity. That gives a whole new meaning to adding a pop of color to your next outfit.

During such a hard year where millions of people stayed home due to the pandemic, neutral colors like browns, tans, and greys reflected the mood of the consumer’s state of mind.

Now a year and a half later, progressions have been made in the healthcare industry, and the number of COVID-19 cases have decreased. The fashion industry has taken the reins on color, to reflect a new year with a new positive outlook.

Here are my favorite looks from New York Fashion Week 2021 that are bursting with colors from the Pantone 2021 trend report.
